The movie puts audiences in the position of flies on the wall when things start to turn supernatural with the two lead characters, Katie and Micah (portrayed by relatively unknown actors Katie Featherston and Micah Sloat, using their real first names). "Paranormal Activity 2" was the sequel to the extremely successful, low-budget 2007 film "Paranormal Activity"—but it couldn't quite outdo the original's performance at the box office. Both films used the same found-footage convention that transformed the horror genre when it was used to great effect in "The Blair Witch Project" in 1999. In what one Hollywood Reporter critic called a "horror-of-personality" movie, the spurned lover takes her pursuit further than audiences expected—by (now infamously) boiling a pet rabbit in a pot in just one of the film's horrifying moments.
The first film was shot primarily on the set of a locked bathroom over just 18 days, helping to stick to the tight budget. The storyline of the second volume overlaps with that of the first, although the whole connection between the two isn't revealed until the film approaches its scream-inducing finale. The stop-motion animation feature film by Tim Burton leveraged its spookiness rather than its Christmas charm to bring moviegoers into theaters during the Halloween season of 1993. Allison is optimistic about the hunger for film in the Quad-Cities, where residents have had just one major movie theater — the Cinemark Davenport 18 — since the Regal Cinema in Moline closed its doors in July. The theater’s general manager, Jameson Ritter, said he hopes The Last Picture House can serve as a hub for both film lovers and the local arts scene as a whole. One such film is The Iron Claw, the new professional wrestling drama from studio A24.

"We were standing right here, which was the drive-thru area of this building," Beck said, sitting in a sleek leather chair in the cinema's pristine, upscale cocktail lounge. "The elitist coasts kind of get these things early, but the middle of America doesn't get that opportunity," Woods said. "That's kind of a big mission for us, too, is getting these movies early and letting this audience in our community be some of the first people in the world to experience a film." Inspired by Nolan's thriller ambition, the two started writing their own scripts.
As the "final touches" of construction wrap up this weekend, Allison said the theater feels fully comfortable bringing customers in on Monday. Going forward, the theater plans to have a blend of blockbusters, repertory cinema and artsy flicks, too. Construction on the building started in April, and Allison said the theater has had Nov. 20 circled on the calendar as an opening day for a while. It’s a tribute to my grandfather, Jim Stopulos, who created unique cinematic experiences in the Quad Cities area for nearly 25 years,” Stopulos said in a press release. Actresses Donna Reed of Denison and Jean Seberg of Marshalltown each have an auditorium in the theater named in their honor.
"At this time, there is no indication the death was the result of suspicious or criminal activity," said police spokesperson Max Winitz. "The Franklin Police Department send its condolences to Hundley’s family, friends, and fans." It’s only fitting, really, given the subtext of journalists being jailed around the world.
The most successful box office hits around that period haven't necessarily offered the biggest chills and thrills.
